Description:
Battered to death with a piece of abstract sculpture titled \'Reconciliation,\' Whitehall departmental head Sir Nicholas Clark is claimed by his colleagues to have been a fine and respected public servant cut off in his prime. Bewildered by the labyrinthine bureaucracy of Whitehall, Scotland Yard\'s Superintendent Jim Milton recognizes a potential ally in Clark\'s young Private Secretary, Robert Amiss. Milton soon learns from Amiss how Whitehall works: that it can be Machiavellian and potentially homicidal, that Sir Nicholas was obnoxious and widely loathed, that he had spent the weeks before his murder upsetting and antagonizing family and associates, and that his last morning on earth had been spent gleefully observing the success of his plan to embarrass his minister and his department publicly. And they still need to discover who wielded the blunt instrument. This is the first of Ruth Dudley Edwards\' witty, iconoclastic but warm-hearted satires about the British Establishment. Dr. Ruth Dudley Edwards was born and brought up in Dublin, Ireland. A historian and prize-winning biographer, she uses her knowledge of the British establishment in her satirical crime novels. She has three times been short-listed for awards from the Crime Writers\' Association. Narrator Bill Wallis has read several of the Dudley Edwards series and is a master of the author\'s language, pace, and cast of characters. Fans of the Edwards/Wallis collaboration will get the pleasure they expect from this production, and newcomers are in for a most enjoyable introduction.

Description:
Art gallery theorems and algorithms are so called because they relate to problems involving the visibility of geometrical shapes and their internal surfaces. This book explores generalizations and specializations in these areas. Among the presentations are recently discovered theorems on orthogonal polygons, polygons with holes, exterior visibility, visibility graphs, and visibility in three dimensions. The author formulates many open problems and offers several conjectures, providing arguments which may be followed by anyone familiar with basic graph theory and algorithms. This work may be applied to robotics and artificial intelligence as well as other fields, and will be especially useful to computer scientists working with computational and combinatorial geometry.

Description:
During the past few decades, the gradual merger of Discrete Geometry and the newer discipline of Computational Geometry has provided enormous impetus to mathematicians and computer scientists interested in geometric problems. This volume, which contains 32 papers on a broad range of topics of current interest in the field, is an outgrowth of that synergism. It includes surveys and research articles exploring geometric arrangements, polytopes, packing, covering, discrete convexity, geometric algorithms and their complexity, and the combinatorial complexity of geometric objects, particularly in low dimension. Book Description This volume, containing 32 papers on a broad range of topics of current interest in the field, is an outgrowth of the synergism of Discrete and Computational Geometry. It includes surveys and research articles exploring geometric arrangements, polytopes, packing, covering, discrete convexity, geometric algorithms and their complexity, and the combinatorial complexity of geometric objects, particularly in low dimension. There are points of contact with many applied areas such as mathematical programming, visibility problems, kinetic data structures, and biochemistry, and with algebraic topology, geometric probability, real algebraic geometry, and combinatorics.

Description:
Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world's greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong. Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence. With the help of Caballo Blanco, a mysterious loner who lives among the tribe, the author was able not only to uncover the secrets of the Tarahumara but also to find his own inner ultra-athlete, as he trained for the challenge of a lifetime: a 50-mile race through the heart of Tarahumara country pitting the tribe against an odd band of Americans, including a star ultramarathoner, a beautiful young surfer, and a barefoot wonder. With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultrarunners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to the climactic race in the Copper Canyons. Born to Run is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

Description:
Geometric methods have been used in complex analysis since the 1930s. Since that time they have become a central part of the research activities of complex analysis. However, these important techniques have never found their way into a text accessible to a broad audience. Steven G. Krantz, a leading worker in complex analysis and a well-known mathematical expositor, has written the first book explaining how complex analysis can be studied using methods of geometry, using the minimum of geometric formalism to gain a maximum of geometric and analytic insight. The climax of the book is an introduction to several complex variables from the geometric viewpoint. The author assumes no background in Riemannian geometry, and only one semester of complex analysis (a review of relevant topics in the classical theory of one complex variable is provided). This inviting book will appeal to students in mathematics, applied mathematics, and physics.

Description:
Lie's group theory of differential equations unifies the many ad hoc methods known for solving differential equations and provides powerful new ways to find solutions. The theory has applications to both ordinary and partial differential equations and is not restricted to linear equations. Applications of Lie's Theory of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations provides a concise, simple introduction to the application of Lie's theory to the solution of differential equations. The author emphasizes clarity and immediacy of understanding rather than encyclopedic completeness, rigor, and generality. This enables readers to quickly grasp the essentials and start applying the methods to find solutions. The book includes worked examples and problems from a wide range of scientific and engineering fields.

Description:
The more you learn about quantum physics, the more you wonder: who is really creating your reality? Fear not: Dr. Quantum, superhero of spiritual science, is here to help you Meet the Real Creator? You! Join this champion of modern thought (sometimes known by his alter ego, Dr. Fred Alan Wolf) on a quest for truth through the strange reality of quantum physics. Listeners will discover how we participate in the manifestation of each moment, why the universe only seems to be beyond our ability to control, and how we can use the principles of cutting- edge science to truly take charge of our lives. On this four-part journey into understanding, Dr. Quantum will unravel such mysteries as: ? Your ?spiritual elephant??who is really in control of your life from a quantum perspective? ? Quantum heaven, quantum hell?if we create our own reality, why do things happen that we don?t want? ? ?If I have a soul, why doesn?t it do something?? How to open a dialogue between your ?self? and ?soul.? ? Is there one soul, or are there many? A quantum perspective on the nature of self and other. Whether he's rescuing listeners from confusion about subatomic subtleties or breaking down the barriers between science and spirit, Dr. Wolf sets the standard for bringing quantum physics down to earth?and into our lives.

Description:
The book gives an introduction to the concepts and methods of many-body problems and quantum fields for graduate students and researchers. The formalism is developed in close conjunction with the description of a number of physical systems: cohesion and dielectric properties of the electron gas, superconductivity, superfluidity, nuclear matter and nucleon pairing, matter and radiation, interaction of fields by particle exchange and mass generation. Emphasis is put on analogies between the various systems rather than on advanced or specialized aspects, with the purpose of illustrating common ideas in different domains of physics. The exposition is self-contained and displays in a coherent way all details of derivations starting from a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and classical electromagnetism. FROM THE REVIEWS: PHYSICS TODAY "It is refreshing to see modern physics presented so broadly at such as advanced level, and for that reason alone the book is worthwhile."

Description:
This book provides a unique treatment of an important area of machine learning and answers the question of how kernel methods can be applied to structured data. Kernel methods are a class of state-of-the-art learning algorithms that exhibit excellent learning results in several application domains. Originally, kernel methods were developed with data in mind that can easily be embedded in a Euclidean vector space. Much real-world data does not have this property but is inherently structured. An example of such data, often consulted in the book, is the (2D) graph structure of molecules formed by their atoms and bonds. The book guides the reader from the basics of kernel methods to advanced algorithms and kernel design for structured data. It is thus useful for readers who seek an entry point into the field as well as experienced researchers. Contents: Why Kernels for Structured Data?; Kernel Methods in a Nutshell; Kernell Design; Basic Term Kernels; Graph Kernels.

Description:
This concise text introduces techniques from quantum mechanics, especially scattering theory, to compute the effects of an external background on a quantum field in general, and on the properties of the quantum vacuum in particular. This approach can be successfully used in an increasingly large number of situations, ranging from the study of solitons in field theory and cosmology to the determination of Casimir forces in nano-technology. The method introduced and applied in this book is shown to give an unambiguous connection to perturbation theory, implementing standard renormalization conditions even for non-perturbative backgrounds. It both gives new theoretical insights, for example illuminating longstanding questions regarding Casimir stresses, and also provides an efficient analytic and numerical tool well suited to practical calculations. Last but not least, it elucidates in a concrete context many of the subtleties of quantum field theory, such as divergences, regularization and renormalization, by connecting them to more familiar results in quantum mechanics. While addressed primarily at young researchers entering the field and nonspecialist researchers with backgrounds in theoretical and mathematical physics, introductory chapters on the theoretical aspects of the method make the book self-contained and thus suitable for advanced graduate students.

Description:
"Signal processing and neural computation have separately and significantly influenced many disciplines, but the cross-fertilization of the two fields has begun only recently. Research now shows that each has much to teach the other, as we see highly sophisticated kinds of signal processing and elaborate hierachical levels of neural computation performed side by side in the brain. In New Directions in Statistical Signal Processing, leading researchers from both signal processing and neural computation present new work that aims to promote interaction between the two disciplines. The book's 14 chapters, almost evenly divided between signal processing and neural computation, begin with the brain and move on to communication, signal processing, and learning systems. They examine such topics as how computational models help us understand the brain's information processing, how an intelligent machine could solve the ""cocktail party problem"" with ""active audition"" in a noisy environment, graphical and network structure modeling approaches, uncertainty in network communications, the geometric approach to blind signal processing, game-theoretic learning algorithms, and observable operator models (OOMs) as an alternative to hidden Markov models (HMMs). About the Author Simon Haykin is University Professor and Director of the Adaptive Systems Laboratory at McMaster University.JosГѓВ© C.
